The Advice Service of the Newham Asian Women's Project was first launched in 1995, and for ten years it was funded by the London Borough of Newham. In 2005, the service was awarded a Legal Services Commission Quality Mark Level 2 for excellence in advice provision in the areas of Family Law, General Advice and Welfare and Benefits. The overall aim of the service is to provide comprehensive advice and support to socially excluded South Asian women, raise their awareness of their rights and increase their access to good quality legal resources, so that they themselves can choose how they want to address their own situations. Much of NAWP's work has been developed through the Advice Service by talking with the women who have approached us, and who have told us about the kinds of protection they need. This has subsequently led to an analysis of the gaps in service provision for South Asian women.
