Imkaan is a national research and policy project, initiated by two sister projects, NAWP and Asian Women's Resource Centre (AWRC) and is currently managed by NAWP.

As its flagship project, Imkaan continues to profile and advocate on behalf of the specialist refuge sector nationally, through accredited training programmes, publications and strategic liaison with government, statutory and community organisations.

50 frontline specialist staff participated in Imkaan training on the effects of violence on children and domestic violence and the law.

45 Barristers, Solicitors and other legal and community advocates attended Imkaan's professional development training seminar accredited by the Law Society and the General Council of the Bar.

2000 quarterly policy bulletins were distributed to over 500 agencies on issues such as Supporting People, domestic violence and the law, immigration and asylum legislation and children.

65% of calls received by Imkaan were from Asian women's' refuges requesting information on policy changes, funding, immigration and asylum, supporting women through the criminal justice system and access to legal representatives.

40% of calls from mainstream agencies were requests for Imkaan to present at meetings on issues affecting Asian women and children.

Over 200 policy-makers, government officials, statutory agencies, funders and service providers contributed to Imkaan's standing national conference on impact of violence on children, in September 2002.

31 Asian women's refuge staff and 10 BME and mainstream refuge staff attended a policy planning meeting on Supporting People at the Deputy Office of the Prime Minister (formerly known as DTLR).
