About Us

Newham Asian Women's Project was set up in June 1987 when we opened our first three bed hostel to provide emergency accommodation and housing support services to South Asian women and their children fleeing domestic violence. From our inception we existed to fill a gap in service provision for South Asian women. From our early experiences we found that generic services either lacked preparation and resources to support South Asian women or failed to understand the complexity of their needs. Our views were shaped by the climate in which we found ourselves. In the 1980s South Asian and other BME communities faced racism and discrimination as well as social, political and economic exclusion. These factors significantly affected access routes to services. South Asian women, who were the most vulnerable, found themselves unrepresented and isolated.

NAWP developed its services under a holistic framework of violence prevention, early intervention and direct provision. This model has proven effective in achieving outcomes for women and their children including increasing their self esteem and confidence, encouraging empowerment through opportunity and in addressing the issues of domestic violence which affects their lives.

NAWP's provides services in five key areas:
  • Safe and emergency housing provision in hostels including housing support services to encourage women to move on to independent living;
  • Training in accredited and non-accredited courses to enable women to increase their opportunities and improve their chances of employment;
  • Mental health services including counselling services and work on self harm;
  • Awareness raising around sexual health and provision to address sexual abuse and exploitation;
  • Rights-based advice and information services.

Our involvement in working with and supporting South Asian women and girls at a grassroots level for the past two decades has provided us with great insight into their needs, especially in the context of all forms of domestic violence, sexual abuse and rape, 'honour'-based violence, forced marriage and self-harm.
